Trump‘s lust for power has seen no end in recent days. In case you missed it, he has recently done the following: :
First, he defied two court orders prohibiting him from freezing federal funds. He did this quietly to continue a freeze on climate spending and other spending directed by Congress. For example, clean energy projects which were approved during the Biden Administration and have already started construction will be shut down.
Second, he has continued to shut down AID, freeze its funds, and inform the employees they will be fired, all in violation of both law and Constitution—only Congress can create or abolish federal agencies. A federal judge ordered a halt yesterday; Trump may not comply.
Third, he has continued to allow Elon Musk’s young zealots – most in their early 20’s, and none with security clearances-control all or parts of several federal agencies, including complete control of the federal payment system. This system maintains the personal data of all Americans, and access is by law strictly limited. I’m waiting to see if Social Security payments go out this month.
Fourth, Trump has now issued sanctions against the International Criminal Court [ICC] because they issued a ruling he did not like [which, in the real world, was actually the right decision]. This is what courts do; they issue a decision; one side wins, the other side loses. The loser of a court case has never been allowed, in any democracy, to retaliate against the court which found against.them. This is like the kid in school who loses a game and says I’m taking the ball and going home.
Like everything else, Trump‘s sanctions against the ICC are illegal. But they are also stupid. Does Trump not know that the US does not have any authority over the over the international court of justice, or any other international body such as the UN? These organizations represent the entire World! The US can’t just tell them what to do. It’s like reality or Mother Nature—They don’t care what Donald Trump thinks. An executive Order declaring that Climate Change does not exist will not stop the earth from warming.
Finally, Trump has created a task force to root out anti-Christian discrimination. This is a false threat and it’s already illegal. Trump‘s real complaint is that the FBI has been enforcing a law passed by Congress regarding access to abortion clinics. Let’s make this clear: if government agents enforce the law, Trump will order them to stop complying with law. Does anyone remember Nurenburg? We’re in Alice in Wonderland territory.
PS: It turns out that five of the Inspector Generals fired by Trump were conducting investigations of Elon Musk.
